World Championships Preview: Jordan Burroughs 74kg
The World Championships will be taking place this September, starting on the 14th, in Kazakhstan. Representing the United State at 74kg will be Jordan Burroughs. In order to claim his spot on Team USA, Burroughs had to face off against former Illionios wrestler Isaiah Martinez at Final X: Lincoln.
Even though Burroughs has been the undisputed king of USA wrestling at 74kg, Martinez gave him very tough matches which included Burroughs being behind in the first match and scoring in the final seconds to get the win. Then in the second match, Martinez beat Burroughs which forced a third match where Burroughs secured his spot on the world team with a 7-1 victory.
So does Burroughs have a chance to win a world title this year at 74kg? Absolutely! Burroughs is already one of the most accomplished wrestlers in the history of USA wrestling. Since 2011, he has won four world championships and an Olympic gold medal. He has also taken bronze twice at the world championships, once in 2014 and again in 2018. In addition to his world titles, Burroughs has won six straight world cups. With a resume like this, coming home with anything other than a gold medal at this year’s world championships will be a disappointment for Burroughs.

Over the course of his international career Burroughs has been a model of consistency with a record of 33-4. In fact, the only time we have really ever seen Burroughs not dominate his competition was in the 2016 Olympics where he was unable to win a medal.
Currently, Burroughs is ranked second in the world at 74kg by United World Wrestling behind Italy’s Frank Chamizo who will likely be Burrough’s biggest competition at the world championships. Chamizo has won one world title at 65kg in 2015 and another at 70kg in 2017 and recently made the jump up to 74kg. Burroughs and Chamizo have wrestled multiple times. They wrestled an exhibition match last year at Beat The Streets which Burroughs won, then they faced off last year at the Yasar Dogu tournament where Chamizo won, and then last year at the world championships for third place where Burroughs won. Most recently, they were supposed to wrestle in the finals match of this year’s Yasar Dogu tournament, but Chamizo forfeited the match in order to protect his number one seed at the world championships.
With Burroughs’ history of winning, and knowing he is moving towards the end of career, he is very driven to become the most accomplished wrestler in the history of USA wrestling. Look for Burroughs to have a great tournament and come home with a gold medal around his neck.
