The Longest 6 Minutes of Your Life

The Longest 6 Minutes of Your Life

Almost every Wrestler on the planet will agree. Your first really tough match that goes the distance, will be the longest 6 minutes of your life. In the grueling chaos of that match, it will feel like you've been wrestling for an eternity. Then, when the Referee finally does stop the action, you'll come to the shocking realization that you've only made it to the end of the first period. It can be one of the most disheartening moments you'll ever experience. But when it's done, it'll be one of the most important moments of your wrestling career.

It's the moment that you'll learn two very important things. First, you'll learn that this is what wrestling is. It's not the WWE, it's not Karate at the YMCA, it's definitely not Soccer or Basketball. It's two people standing center stage for the world to see, both giving every ounce of everything that they have, to physically dominate the other. It's brutally intense, brain stoppingly stressful, and exhilarating to the point that it would satisfy even the hungriest of adrenaline junkies.

Then, when the reality of all of that sets in, you'll learn the second thing. You'll learn exactly what you're made of. Do you have what it takes to continue on? Are you going to step back up to that line with confidence, or are you going to stutter and stall as you look for a way out. Can you hear your coach’s instructions, or is everything nothing more than a chaotic blur.

It's an instant reality check. A reality check in the truest form. It lets you know exactly where you stand. How you'll react when put under fire. It's an unbelievably sobering experiences. Any visions of grandeur you may have had prior to that match are instantly swept away. Instead, they're replaced with the very real sense of struggle. Either in victory or defeat, you'll now truly know what that word means.

But it's important that you don't let that moment define you. Even the most fragile of individuals can be forged into a monster in time, and the strongest can also be ground to dust just the same. That moment is nothing more than a reality check that let's you know where you stand at exactly that moment in time. The defining moment is what you do after that. How do you handle such a harsh dose of reality? Do you fold up and call it quits? Or are you back on the mats on Monday ready to grind. Do you stay hungry in victory? Or do you let it go to your head and slack off.

Moments of adversity will happen throughout your entire life. They may not all be on the same physical level as wrestling, but they will happen. It's important to remember in both life and wrestling, that the road is long. And that moments like this are not the road itself, but just points along the way. If you can’t work through these points, you'll never reach that shinny destination that you dream of at the end of the road.

So stay hungry, and keep your eye on the prize.
