Brandon Wright was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is the son of Tim Wright, a former amateur wrestler and the only four-time NCAA Division-II champion at SIUE, whose 1986 title is on record as the best single-season winning percentage in program history (41-2).

With a father as accomplished as Tim, it didn't come as a surprise that Brandon picked up an interest in the sport from an early age. Wright was first coached by his dad and later became one of the state's top high school wrestlers while competing for Grand View and Cathedral high schools, for whom he conquered two state titles while also taking home a national title as a cadet at the freestyle Nationals.

With a record as impressive as Brandon's, the future looked very promising with a scholarship at the Indiana University to be expected. Sadly that prospect never came true due to Brandon's grades. In a 2017 interview to the Greenfield Reporter website, Wright quoted "past mistakes and immaturity" as the main culprits for falling short of this career dream.

Forced to travel the junior college route after graduating from Warren Central, Brandon achieved redemption by working his way to a two-time NJCAA All-American status, going on to earn two NAIA national titles at Grand View University in Iowa.

As a collegiate wrestler, Wright became one of Grand View's top athletes in the NAIA circuit. Wright earned a 58-8 career record at Grand View and never lost a match against NAIA competition, while also earning Grand View's first All-American finish at University Nationals.

The solid work done for Grand View University earned the Indiana native a position as an assistant coach for the team during the 2016-17 season, prior to linking up with the Indiana University's Hoosiers as an assistant coach - an offer that came by way of coach Duane Goldman on September 2017.
