DEFENSIVE WRESTLING MOVES

In folk style wrestling, defensive moves are just as important as offensive moves. Defensive wrestling is about preventing your opponent from scoring points by defending against their takedown attempts and escaping from their control on the mat. Here are some common defensive folk style wrestling moves:

Sprawl: The sprawl is the most important wrestling technique used to defend against a single leg, double leg, or any offensive attack that might come your way. The wrestler sprawls out, dropping their hips and extending their legs back, and applying hip pressure on the head to make it difficult for their opponent to take them down.

Granby Roll: The Granby Roll is a defensive move used to escape from the bottom position. The wrestler rolls over their shoulder, away from their opponent, and comes up to their feet, breaking their opponent's hold and earning an escape point.

Switch: The Switch is another escape move used when the wrestler is on the bottom. The wrestler moves their hips away from their opponent, while simultaneously turning to face them, and then comes up to their feet.

Stand-Up: The Stand-Up is a move used to escape from the bottom position. The wrestler stands up while maintaining control of their opponent's hands and then either turns to face them or moves away to earn an escape point.

Whizzer: The Whizzer is a defensive move used to prevent an opponent from taking you down. The wrestler drops their weight and applies a tight over hook on their opponent's arm, preventing them from getting to the legs for a takedown.

Front Headlock: The Front Headlock is a defensive move used when an opponent shoots for a takedown. The wrestler sprawls and then quickly wraps their arm around their opponent's head, pulling them down and controlling them on the mat and most commonly spinning behind their opponent to secure the takedown.
