Alex "The Bull" Marinelli outlasts Evan Wick in 165lb Showdown

Big 10 Rivals Face Off

In a rematch between Big 10 Rivals, Iowa's #2 Alex Marinelli again beat Wisconsin's #3 Evan Wick in a match between returning All-Americans. Marinelli's motor and gas tank ended up paying dividends in a high-paced match between young great grapplers. With Big Tens and NCAA's coming soon, this match had big seeding implications.

Marinelli struck early with an elbow off high crotch that he switched to a double for 2. After an escape, Alex got in deep on a single leg that got stalemated, but the traditionally handfighting-heavy Hawkeye was on his offense early and often. In the second, Marinelli started under and kept a long scramble going when Wick tried to throw a leg in, but Wick took over with top pressure and cross body rides.

He rode him the whole 2nd period, with Marinelli not able to do much. To start the 3rd, Marinelli cut Wick neutral immediately, but paid for it when Evan converted a sweep single to a fast finish. With riding time locked, and time closing down, Marinelli finally found the reversal he'd hunted for earlier and tied the match 4-4. The Bull put together a very tough ride, needing to scramble and mat return his way to overtime.

In sudden victory, Marinelli relied on the post again and grabbed a double leg, and with it the victory.
